Riverfest

From 1979 to River Magic: Our Story

Founded in 1979 by Gene Merritt and DARE, Inc. to revitalize downtown Wilmington and showcase the Cape Fear River, the first Riverfest drew 10,000 with street fairs and raft races. It grew into one of NC’s top fall festivals, adding fireworks, extreme sports, and drone shows.

After weather delays and a COVID hiatus, the 45th anniversary in 2024 welcomed over 110,000 attendees and continues to generate $13 million in impact.

Rules for Our Fur Babies

We know you all love your pets, and we love ours as well. Unfortunately, due to city ordinances, we cannot allow pets onsite during Riverfest. According to the city code, the presence of animals at festivals poses health and safety concerns for both spectators. It is also a violation of the code to refuse to remove the animal from the festival. Thanks for your understanding.
Here is a copy of the city ordinance for reference:

“It shall be unlawful for any person owning or having possession, charge, custody or control of any animal, to take that animal, whether on a leash or otherwise, into or allow the animal to enter the boundaries of the Azalea Festival, Riverfest or any public street, road, highway, sidewalk, alley, parking lot, or right-of-way which is temporarily closed to regular traffic for special events,”
